Respected businessman and entrepreneur known for his contributions to the beverage distribution industry in South Carolina.
Chris J. Yahnis was born in Boston, Massachusetts where he grew up a diehard fan of the Boston Red Sox and remained in the area through his graduation from the University of Massachusetts in 1950. Upon graduation he would go on to serve in the United States Army which ultimately brought him to Fort Jackson in Columbia where he met his future wife Victoria Copses 1952. Chris started his career in the beer business with National Brewing Company and Schafer Distributing, before making the jump in 1966 to start the Yahnis Company in Florence, SC with his now wife Victoria.
Chris would go on to become a titan in the beer business, working with legislators and his fellow distributors to shape the industry as it’s known today. As his business expanded so did his family’s involvement, with his son Byron joining the business and helping oversee its expansion to Myrtle Beach. His oldest son Jimmy later joined the company after a career in real estate, and in 1994 Chris transitioned ownership to the next generation.
As his business ventures grew, so did his philanthropic endeavors. Chris was involved with the South Carolina Mental Health Board, Florence County United Way, Francis Marion University, and many other organizations in his local communities. He received an honorary degree from Francis Marion University and was also a recipient of the State’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto.
While Chris saw much success and happiness in life, there was nothing he loved more than his family. He is missed dearly by all who knew him and his legacy lives on through The Yahnis Company.
